Role Description

Structural Engineer required for a temporary/short term role, to manage the dangerous structures team for a local authority based in South London.

Although this role is an initial short term contract (1 month), it may be extended for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will be required to manage the Council’s dangerous structures service and to provide technical and professional advice on structural matters to customers and Building Control Surveyors.

Duties will include inspection of alleged dangerous structures, preparation of written reports and taking appropriate action. Where necessary, you will need to carry or follow up inspections and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of the public is not compromised.

You will also be required to undertake full range of specialist structural engineering duties throughout the borough, and deputise for the Building Control manager in relation to dangerous structures and structural matters. 

Other duties will include carrying out the inspection of building works on-site at all stages of construction to ensure compliance with approved proposals or to agree that works are in compliance with the relevant sections of legislation including compliance.

Requirements:

  • Degree qualified in civil or structural engineering
  • Significant & relevant post-qualification experience or able to demonstrate a comparable level of knowledge and skills obtained through relevant experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of main legislation, including the London Building Acts, Building Act 1984 & Building Regulations
  • Detailed knowledge of building construction, including RC, structural steel & timber work.
  • Detailed knowledge of structural engineering, including checking/commenting on structural calcs.
  • Detailed knowledge of dangerous structures, including appropriate remedial action to make safe.
  • Supervision of building works on site.
  • Experience of examining plans & calcs for compliance with relevant standards & codes of practice.
