Role Description

Senior Building Control Officer required for contract role, working for the Building Control department of a local authority based in South London. 

Job Description: 

1.Responsible to the Head of Building Control or Team Leader for one or more of the following:

•The Building Act 1984 and the Building Regulations

•The residual London Building Acts and allied legislation

•Supervision and inspection of work on site


•Full Plans

•Structural design and checking

•Fire safety issues

•Initial Notices

•Temporary and Special Structures

•Planning Liaison


2.Responsible for ensuring compliance with the Building Regulations for a range of varying types of building work, and for keeping up with and abreast of trends, new legislation and professional and/or technical developments across the range of all building types and techniques

3.Gives professional advice and guidance to builders, developers, architects and householders on all types of building work.

4.Supervision of consultants and outside agencies as required.

5.Supervises, coaches, monitors and trains building control assistants and other staff as allocated.

6.Ensures that proper records are kept and maintained including computer records.

7.Liaises with other Council departments and services and gives advice and direction as required

8.Deals with all types of building work under the Building Regulations and other relevant and appropriate legislation.

9.Instigates enforcement and/or regularisation action and paperwork and sees the work through to a satisfactory completion. Preparation of evidence and appearance at inquiries and Court 

10.Drafts committee and other reports as required.

11.Liaises with the Fire Authority and gives advice and direction on fire related matters including the preparation of consents and/or Notices


Candidates must have a minimum of 5+ years experience within building control, including a thorough knowledge of building regulations, London Building Acts, dangerous structures and structural design & checking. 

Start date: November 2016

Rate: £25.93 per hour (Limited Company rate) 

Working hours: 36 per week

Contract duration: Initial 2 months contract, then renewable subject to workload.
